Accessing Computers using Screen Reader and Keyboard
This training material teaches has been prepared in order to teach visually impaired people the basics of how to access the computer using a speech screen reader.
Course outline and learning objectives
The course gives a beginner's introduction to Windows and an in-depth introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word for those using screen readers.
By the end of this course you will know how to use a screen reader and computer to:
- Work with computer files and disks
- Create simple letters
- Check and edit your work
- Print out documents
- Scan printed documents so they can be read to you by your computer
Previous experience required
The course is designed for beginners, so no previous computer experience is required.
Equipment required
- Ordinary PC, with Microsoft Windows 98 or above
- Sound card and speakers
- Screen reader software
- Floppy disk (to save your work onto)
- Printer
- Scanner

Approximately 2 hours.
